General Description
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation, this position administers group exercise classes.
Group Exercise Instructors are responsible for leading safe, effective, and enjoyable fitness classes.
Group Exercise Instructors provide class participants with proper form and technique demonstration, exercise modifications, and exercise progressions.
Job Functions Essential Functions: • Conduct and lead a fun and effective aqua group exercise class, which include proper warm-up, stretching, cardio, resistance training, and cool-down.
• Arrive to class early to set up for class and be prepared to deliver a successful class.
• Responsible for making sure all equipment is put away properly and in an orderly fashion.
• Be available before or after class if participants have a question about the class or a particular exercise.
• Make any necessary adjustments to exercises to insure a safe and effective class.
• Become familiar with participants.
• Perform job safely and in compliance with District safety rules and procedures.
• Communicate and enforce Park District rules and policies.
• Provide excellent customer service and maintain a positive public image by addressing questions and concerns from staff, patrons, participants, and parents immediately.
Contact and ask for assistance from supervisor or other Park District staff when necessary.
• Communicate any program/patron concerns, questions, or changes to the Learn to Swim Coordinator, as soon as possible.
If there is an immediate concern notify the supervisor on duty.
• Report maintenance needs/broken equipment to supervisor; follow-up on status with supervisor and/or maintenance supervisor.
• Complete accident and incident reports and report any issues to supervisor.
• Work as a team player with the aquatic team to share space and equipment, as well as work together to set up and take down aquatic programming times.
Additional Functions: • Attend staff meetings and trainings as specified.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor or other Park District administrative personnel.
• Must maintain current industry certifications.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Must have previous education or experience in teaching aquatic group exercise classes.
• Current national certification as an aqua fitness instructor and/or group exercise instructor.
• Certification in additional group fitness formats such as Zumba if you will be teaching it.
• Knowledgeable in health and fitness field.
• Must have the ability to solve problems as they arise and be able to perform tasks without supervision.
• Must be highly motivated and able to assume a positive and active role, even while working under potentially stressful conditions (hot or cold weather, upset or injured participants, etc.
) • Must have the ability to enforce City of Middleton Parks and Recreation Dept rules and make sound decisions in order to secure the safety and well-being of all park visitors, facilities, and equipment.
• Must be able to complete required City of Middleton Parks and Recreation Dept trainings.
• Certification in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) within 1 month of employment and keep certification current.
The District provides this training.
Education, Training and Experience Must have and maintain a current Fitness or Group Fitness related certification.
Must have a current certification for the class you are teaching, if applicable.
(Aqua Zumba, Deep Water, etc.
) Must have a current First Aid certification or equivalent.
Must have a current Adult CPR certification or equivalent.
Continuing education/renewals of certifications kept up to date and submitted to the Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation on or before certification expire.
