The Second Chance Pell program provides students serving in a state penal institution the opportunity, to receive federal Pell Grant funding for tuition, fees, and books/supplies under a U.
S.
Department of Education Experimental Site Initiative.
The Student Support Advisor will provide academic and career advising, monitor students' academic progress, and serve as a mentor to increase student success.
Individuals with lived experience are encouraged to apply! This position works closely with college faculty and staff, and Department of Corrections staff while serving students both in a virtual and face-to-face format in prisons throughout the state.
This position will be supporting a culturally diverse, under-resourced student population, participating in a high profile, national program being monitored by the Department of Education.
Up to 50% of this person's time will be working in prisons, with routine in-state overnight travel 2-5 days per month, so access to reliable transportation is required.

This is a full time, limited term, exempt position, funded by a grant through December 1, 2025.
Core office hours are 8:00-4:30 pm, M-F however, position will work some nights and weekends as needed.

Responsibilities Include: Provide general academic and career advising to prospective students.
Present information about the college, programs, and application process during Outreach Events.
Assist students with completing the college application and submitting any necessary documentation.
Assist college staff in processing student applications.
Communicate application status and request necessary documentation from prospective students.
Inform students of their admission status and next steps.
Review and interpret student transcripts and placement scores and communicate any impact these may have on admissions or course selection.
Provide high-level academic and career advising to admitted students by assisting them in developing their academic goals through program and course selections, and transfer information.
Enroll and/or withdraw students from courses.
Advise students of any academic or Financial Aid consequences involving course enrollment.
Organize and run Student Orientation Events which include supporting students as they learn and navigate college expectations, policies, and procedures.
Provide technical support for students using the program's computers and learning management system.
Provide student success materials and monitor students' knowledge and understanding of the content.
Collaborate with faculty, college, and Department of Corrections staff to monitor students' academic progress and grades.
Participate in team discussions, while considering trauma-informed practices to adapt student support strategies and practices.
Collaborate on student behavior interventions and program concerns that impact the student and/or learning community.
Participate in ongoing professional development.
Build professional and trustworthy relationships with enrolled students.
Provide continual, individualized coaching, counsel, support, and case management to students experiencing incarceration and trauma which may impact academic success.
Proactively monitor students' progress and work with students to celebrate strengths and develop strategies in areas that need improvements.
Help students develop self-efficacy by setting and achieving their own goals, monitoring progress, adjusting their behavior, and solving their problems.
Provide referrals and support students to access additional resources as needed.
Maintains a commitment to the college mission, vision, and values.
Complies with college policies and procedures.
Professionally collaborates with colleagues and follows through with all assigned work commitments.
Understand and maintain FERPA restrictions.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Professional and effective communications skills and ability to effectively collaborate with diverse socioeconomic and culturally diverse populations and persons with disabilities.
Experience assessing student learning, assisting students in goal setting, and referring students to resources.
Demonstrated experience in successfully advising, building positive relationships, motivating and supporting underserved and culturally diverse people.
Experience supporting individuals that are or have been justice involved is preferred.
Experience in community outreach and partnership development; knowledge of local social service systems.
Knowledge of database systems.
Preferred knowledge or ability to quickly learn, Peoplesoft and OnBase.
Minimum Qualifications: 1.
Bachelor's degree 2.
Two (2) years (4000 hours) of direct student support experience.
3.
Ability to travel and work in prisons across the state of Wisconsin about 50% of the time.
The ability for overnight travel 2-5 nights per month.
Mileage and meal per diem available.
4.
Ability to pass annual background check performed by Department of Corrections.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire and maintain work authorization throughout the employment term.
