Job Summary:
This is a full-time, clinical and teaching position in the Zoological Medicine Section within the Department of Surgical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, School of Veterinary Medicine (UW-SVM).
This position will support the teaching and clinical service responsibilities of the section with a focus on our wildlife rehabilitation medicine programs and exotic companion animal service.
Responsibilities: The candidate will be a member of the Zoological Medicine Section at the UW-SVM, which currently consists of 3 ACZM diplomates.
The candidate will participate in the clinical service and teaching activities of the Zoological Medicine Section, which are currently provided through the Special Species Health Service (focused on zoological companion animals [exotic pets]; caseload ~ 2,100 cases/year) and the Wildlife Medicine Service (focused on native wildlife in several rehabilitation facilities; caseload - 1,500 cases/year).
The successful full-time applicant will be expected to provide up to 38 weeks of clinical service per annum between the two different services.
Seasonal variation in the clinical service load is to be expected as the wildlife medicine rotation is offered only between April - October each year.
The Zoological Medicine Section also provides year-round clinical services to regional wildlife centers and zoological facilities.
Additional job duties include 1) active participation in the didactic and laboratory instruction of veterinary students in exotic pet medicine and wildlife rehabilitation offered in the UW-SVM curriculum; 2) providing continuing education opportunities in exotic pet medicine and wildlife medicine for veterinarians in the state of Wisconsin; 3) maintaining and building excellent relationships with partners in our outreach programs; 4) active participation in the training and mentoring of our zoological medicine residents, zoological medicine interns, and small animal rotating interns; 5) participation in regularly scheduled didactic rounds, including Zoological Medicine Journal Club, Exotic Animal Morbidity & Mortality Rounds, and Exotic Animal Pathology Rounds.
