Under the leadership of the Pool Manager and Aquatics Program Coordinator, Water Safety Instructors (WSI’s) are responsible for providing a safe and fun swim-lesson program in accordance with the American Red Cross Learn to Swim program at the Sun Prairie Family Aquatic Center.
Dates Needed: May - August
Hours: 6-20 hours/week (If candidate possesses current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification, there is the opportunity for additional lifeguarding hours).
Hours will vary and may take place Monday Thursday between 9:00 am and 6:30 pm.
Essential Job Functions
Major Duties/Essential Functions
Create and implement American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program swim lessons that are safe, fun and engaging
Prepare and submit weekly lesson plans corresponding to assigned levels
Provide feedback and form correction on various strokes and techniques
Perform first aid, CPR and utilize AED as needed
Complete necessary reports and paperwork such as attendance and report cards
Other duties as assigned
Minor Duties/Responsibilities
Attend all staff trainings, in-services and meetings
Conduct swim evaluations for level placement as necessary
Remain properly nourished and hydrated prior to, during and after shift
Assist in coverage for employee absences for swim lessons
Requirements of Work
Experience/Education:
Must be 16 years or older
Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification required
One year of Swim Lessons experience preferred
Skills, knowledge or abilities needed:
Experience working in an aquatic facility setting is desired
Knowledge of all American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program levels
Ability and willingness to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions
Ability and willingness to perform a variety of tasks
Ability and willingness to keep accurate records and complete all necessary paperwork
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public in a courteous and tactful manner
Provide clear communication to and from supervisor and the public
Regular and punctual attendance.
Attend staff meetings and training sessions

Must have a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification or ability to obtain certification prior to the first day of swim lessons
Able/willing to work flexible hours
Able/willing to work in an outdoor work environment with exposure to the weather
